Update: Jana was adopted in January, 2003. We've received the following updates from her new home: 01/14/2003 Jana is doing fine, learning
commands, and really likes the tiny pieces of cooked
chicken we use for reward treats! She is learning that the
upholstered furniture is NOT a dog bed. She prefers the
comfort of the people furniture, but has found the dog
pillows offer more long-term comfort, as she does not have
to get "off" of them! Aaron has taken Jana on several
walks, and now has a willing subject to apply his 4 years
of 4-H dog training skills to teach her to walk on a loose
leash, sit, etc. Jana definitely wants to pull and sniff,
so he will have a good challenge this year. Jana did not
seem to believe at first that our other two dogs WERE dogs.
They certainly looked different than BCs! The small, bushy
Border Terrier is fine with her, except if Jana is
interacting with the Poodle and the BT thinks she should
protect the Poodle. [The BT is a bossy peacekeeper!] The
squirrels are providing plenty of exercise, as all three
dogs seem to agree that the yard should be kept squirrel
free. Jana loves to have children pet her and is very
friendly (but not overbearing). A friend brought her 4 and
8 year olds over to meet Jana, and the neighbor boys (1st
and 5th grades) were here this morning. Thanks for picking
out such a nice dog for us!
04/24/2003 Jana started jumping over the
4' chain link fence to wander the neighborhood. Sometimes
she herds joggers, bicycle riders, strollers, etc. If they
stand still it is fine, but these people are out for
exercise, and want to move!
Jana is improving on basic obedience commands and at 4-H
dog training, but completely ignores our commands or
pleading when she is loose. We are able to catch her by
stepping on a long shoe string attached to her collar,
luring her into the garage with treats, or by herding her
into a neighbor's fenced yard. Once caught she is very
easily approached. At the moment, we are installing a
chicken wire extension to the fence. Hopefully, the added
height will curtail her ability to leave our yard.
05/09/2007 Jana no longer actively seeks to run off. If
the door is open and unsupervised, she will take the
opportunity to walk out of it, but will mostly come back
when called. (minor miracle). She still participates in 4-H
dog training and is learning to retrieve the dumbbell this
year. She is now trustworthy enough to work off leash. She
has gone to numerous agility classes and this has helped
her learn to focus on her handler more and the other
distractions less. We enjoy having Jana as part of our
family.
