Mystic (DEAF)

Mystic was in a situation with too many dogs and the owners agreed to relinquish / rehome some of them. They had been well fed but no vetting had been done since puppyhood. Upon arrival with GLBCR, Mystic was terrified as she endured her first car ride. Totally shut down, she soon came to realize that at her current foster home, she was getting LOTS of attention, and she liked it. Having never been socialized to other people, Mystic exhibits ‘stranger danger’ insecurities that her foster mom is working on with her. Her behavior has improved but there is still work to do.

Don’t fall in love with the ‘look’ of this girl unless you are ready for the training that goes along with her. She is a "double merle," which means both of her parents were merles. Sadly, like many of the offapring of such pairings, Mystic is also deaf. By nature, she is sweet, submissive and loving. Mystic is a snuggler and just wants to be loved but she also needs to continue with her sign language and stranger danger issues. She’s learned so much already and her potential is limitless with the right owner.

BC Traits / Behaviors: Herdy, fearful nipping, submissive, skittish due to her being deaf (quick, fast motions can startle her)

Dogs: yes; loves to play and plays rough (she may not be appropriate for a tiny dog)

Kids: not recommended for young children due to her herding and potential nipping when startled. School age kids would be okay with proper instruction on how to interact with Mystic.

Housemanners: She’s fairly well behaved in the house; however, if given the opportunity, we won’t just snitch the food off your plate --- she’ll snitch the whole plate or bowl! At first, she went after shoes (never chewed them – just took them but she has not done that in a while. Will countersurf, if given the opportunity.

Escape Tendencies: She has only jumped a snow fence when she wanted to play with another dog. She has not tried to escape the 4 foot chain link fence.

Fears: Strangers

On / Off Leash: Due to being deaf, I would not recommend Mystic for being off lead at this time. She does walk fairly well on a leash but might bark or growl at a stranger if they approach. Once she feels comfortable, she will just lay down while you talk to someone on a walk. Her fear seems more intense with men than with women.

Grooming: Mystic LOVES being brushed and she is good with being touched all over (once she trusts you).

Car Rides: Learning to love them. She likes to look out the window at first but then will lay down on the seat. She is calm in her crate in the car.

Commands (in sign language): All of her commands are an on-going process but some she knows better than others. She gets no, back up, go, stop, stay, come (still working on this one), sit (still working on this one – she usually does the plop drop instead of sitting). She drags a leash some days so I can get her if she wants to stay outdoors. Her future adopter will get a video of her signs and training.

Games & Toys: She will self-play by dropping a toy and then chasing it. Yesterday, she actually played fetch for about 6 times by bringing the ball back and letting me remove it from her mouth. Likes racquetballs, tennis balls, stuffed animals and nyla-bones (for chewing).

Water Play: Jumped in my pond the first week I had her so I think water would not be a problem for her.

Barking: She will bark to alert about a person, dog or vehicle near her house. But she is not excessively barky. I usually keep a ball in my hand to distract her IF she is doing something I don’t want and it does the trick.

Treats: Loves treats but is cautious at first. LOVES peanut butter.

For the right person (people) this girl could go to her new home. Please note that Mystic may require more than one meet & greet to ensure her adoption success! She’s a diamond in the rough.
