Jack has been with us for three short weeks, and no matter what has been thrown at him, he never ceases to amaze me. He came to us as a stray juvenile dog, who did not appear to have any training. After three days his personality began to show. He is a people dog who is willing to learn and learn quickly.
Since being here he has learned sit, sit at the door to wait to go out, sit in his kennel until we say “break” to let him out, sit to take treats nicely. He’s learning to sit nicely to greet friends when re-meeting them. Treats and tugs are big motivators for this young boy.
He is learning not to pull on a leash when walking. He’s beginning to down quickly, even willing to down with a cat two feet away from him. He can jump into the tub and likes water. He especially wants to jump up next to you on the couch to snuggle, and reluctantly to jump off when told. He loves to snuggle.
He’s great with kenneling and finds security in the kennel as he will take a treat there to eat. He still barks when we leave but settles after a short bit of barking in his kennel.
He has gotten along with all the other dogs he’s met, a border, an Australian cattle dog and a small poodle mix. He can play rough trying to herd the other dog, but inside he’s just as likely to snuggle with them on the couch.
Like many Border Collies, Jack is a “sight” motivated dog, so training will be a must for him. He is working on being calm around cars, roller bladers, squirrels, and other moving things. He is also a juvenile dog, who can be mouthy and exuberant but never to be aggressive. He’s such a loving dog who wants to please. So it’s important to remember for a dog who came to us with little to no training, he learns quickly and I have seen progress in every area that I have started training him.
I think life would be easier for all with a fenced yard, as his recall is getting better, but give him a distraction and he’s gone. Currently, Jack doesn’t have a fenced yard so every time we go out he is on a leash and we have survived by going on walks and doing plenty of training throughout the day.
Jack is good with sitting children, but the first week he was with us, we had several Thanksgiving guests, some aged 5 to 13. When young children run around the house he wanted to herd them by nipping. Took one day for him to feel comfortable in the kennel in the same room with them without barking as they ran around. And when they sat still, he was happy to come to them and let them pet him and responded with kisses. The 11 and 13 year olds were able to go slow around him and he did fine out of kennel. For this reason, I recommend him for anyone who has no children or older children.
This guy will make a great companion dog, who with training could compete in agility, rally, obedience and do therapy work. There may be many other areas for him to compete, he is so willing and eager to please.
